A Novel in a Day
Want to try Novel in a Day in your classroom? Here's how you can do it.
After selecting a novel, it's a good idea to model how to complete certain parts of the planning process with your students. You can all read chapter 1 and create a presentation together as a class. If you are focusing on summarizing, then that is what you would model. Have your students create scripts of what they are going to say or do and practice one time. Go over any handling guidelines for using the technology and just like that, you can say "Lights, camera, action!"
When you feel your students can develop their own project, assign groups, chapters, and assignments. They will not read any other chapters but the one that is assigned to them. Be very specific that since they are the only ones reading their chapter, they have to make sure they summarize the most important parts and it needs to be clear to everyone else who didn't read that chapter. When all groups are done with their project, schedule a presentation day where everyone sees the projects that were developed for each chapter. This way, students will "read" a novel in a day by viewing the summaries of each chapter as told by their peers.
